Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products vs. Regular Cleaning Products as an Effective Cleaner
Even though many people still doubt eco-friendly products, companies are always pushing towards selling such products to promote sustainable living and a healthy home environment.
Natural products can clean
It is no question that regular cleaning products can clean dirt effectively since the products’ chemicals are designed to clean, sanitize and disinfect. However, alternative choices such as biobased cleaning products can still be as effective as surface cleaners with natural ingredients mentioned above present in the product. But, do natural cleaners disinfect?
Donna Duberg, assistant professor of clinical laboratory science at Saint Louis University, says that “green” cleaners can remove dirt. However, not all can disinfect. But, there are other all-natural cleaning products available in the market or make at home that can disinfect and clean, like YVY. These products do it without exposing you and your family to harsh chemicals found in commercial cleaning products.
Chemist and founder of Evidence-Based Mommy, Dr. Samantha Radford, also explains that natural cleaners can remove many germs from the surface. But, that doesn’t mean it can kill germs. So, she recommended a two-step cleaning and sanitizing process to reduce germs spread, especially in the kitchen. Hence, The United States Department of Agriculture stated that vinegar can kill germs, taking at least 30 minutes.
As much as they can clean kitchen messes, the main reason why they chose to turn to environmentally-friendly cleaning products is their impact on the environment, health, and budget.
Advantages in Choosing an Eco Cleaning Solution
The environmental impact
Biobased cleaning products do not automatically mean environmentally friendly. Still, the product labels help you find a more environmentally friendly product than the average and traditional cleaning products. There are two main reasons why these products are classified as environmentally friendly: they are made from renewable resources and are biodegradable.
Commonly, regular cleaning products are non-recyclable. When they can’t be used, they tend to not decompose and end up leaching toxic chemicals into the ground for years. Biobased products are a go-to when you are going to shop the environmentally friendly because they are made from renewable resources. This means that they are highly sustainable, unlike most products that are petroleum-based.
Other winning benefits are that it is biodegradable and minimizes waste. Cleaning products don’t have to end up in garbage dumps as they do decompose. This can eliminate harmful after-effects when disposed of, making us feel and live better. And products like YVY, that use a reuse bottle and recyclable pods, help even more to minimize waste.
The Health Impact
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), certified green cleaning products are used to clean offices, schools, and institutions and meet several health standards.
One reason households prefer green products is that they don’t have ingredients that can cause asthma, unlike the regular ones. Cleaning products can contribute to asthma indirectly by releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can form into ozone, a primary component of smog that can cause asthma.
Cleaning products release over 32 tons of ozone-forming VOCs into the air each day, making children growing up in a smoggy environment exposed to respiratory problems such as asthma. That is why certified green cleaning products must meet strict limits regarding the levels of volatile chemicals emitted.
The Budget Impact
A misconception common to many is biobased products are expensive. But in fact, not all products with a BioPreferred certification are costly. Some of them are low cost, wherein you can save a ton of money more than regular cleaning products, while also helping save our planet. That's what we call a win-win!
